Charge before the seal.

Retainer deposits, booking fees, application fees. Stripe Connect, CAD-native, ACSS Debit — natively, not as a brittle Zapier hop.

Money in, before the doc is binding.

A Pay $X.XX field that signers can't skip. The signature won't apply until Stripe returns Approved — and the receipt URL prints on the audit certificate.

Charge before seal.

Stripe charge must clear before the signature field unlocks. No more sending the contract, then chasing the deposit invoice separately.

CAD-native + ACSS Debit.

Default currency is CAD. Pre-authorized debit (ACSS) for high-ticket Canadian retainers. USD + EUR + GBP available when you bill abroad.

Receipt on cert page.

The Stripe receipt URL prints on the audit certificate next to the SHA-256 hashes — every signed PDF is also a paid receipt.

Drag a payment field like any other

Same field palette. Same drag-and-drop. The Pay field gets an amount, a currency, and one toggle: "Block signing until charge clears". Sender connects their Stripe account once at /app/billing.

Stripe Connect Standard.

You keep the merchant of record relationship with Stripe. Funds settle directly to your bank account — Ink. never holds your money.

Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACSS.

Toggle which methods you accept per field. ACSS Debit (Pre-Authorized Debit) is unlocked for any field over $1,000 CAD by default.

Refunds from the dashboard.

Void a document → refund the charge in one click. Partial refunds supported. The cert page updates with the refund timestamp.

Receipt on the cert page.

The audit certificate prints Receipt URL, last 4 digits, charge ID, and the exact amount in the cert's "PAYMENT CAPTURED" block.

Signer experience

One tap. No leaving the doc.

The signer taps Pay $2,500.00, a Stripe-hosted sheet slides up over the same page, they tap Apple Pay or punch in a card, the button flips to Paid · Receipt #ch_3OQ… and the signature field unlocks. No new tab, no new email.

Apple Pay + Google Pay by default.

On supported devices the signer's wallet pops first. A retainer paid with FaceID in 1.4 seconds is genuinely fewer taps than a wet-ink check.

PCI scope stays with Stripe.

Card details never touch the Ink. JS bundle. Stripe Elements hosts the input, returns a charge token, and that's all Ink. sees.

Receipt + signed PDF in one email.

After the doc seals, the signer's inbox gets one email with the certified PDF attached and the Stripe receipt URL linked in the footer.

Failed payment recovery in-flow.

Card declined? The signer sees a retry option and a card-swap form right there. No abandoned contract, no support ticket.

Ideal use cases

Where Stripe + signature is the workflow.

Canadian businesses where the contract and the deposit have always been two separate emails — until now.

Boutique law retainers

Engagement letter + $2,500 CAD retainer in one document. Trust account or operating account routing rules per matter type.

Real estate deposit holds

Pre-listing agreements with the marketing budget deposit captured. Lease applications with first-and-last collected at signing.

Insurance application fees

Brokerage application forms with non-refundable underwriting fees collected upfront — no more chasing payment after issuance.

Consulting engagement deposits

SOWs with a 25% mobilization deposit baked into the signature flow. Project doesn't kick off until the deposit clears.

E-commerce custom orders

Bespoke product orders where the spec sheet is the contract — buyer signs, pays the deposit, the workshop starts.

Therapy session prepay

PHIPA-friendly intake + session-block prepay in one envelope. No-show fees authorized via ACSS at intake.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

What do I need to start charging?

A Stripe Connect Standard account in your business name — most Canadian businesses can open one in under 10 minutes with a CRA business number and a void cheque. Connect it once at /app/billing → Stripe. The Pay field unlocks across all your templates and documents immediately.

What currencies are supported?

CAD (default), USD, EUR, GBP, AUD. Per-field currency selection — your law firm can take retainers in CAD on Canadian engagement letters and USD on cross-border ones from the same template. FX conversion uses Stripe's rates; no Ink. markup.

What happens if the document is voided after payment?

One-click refund from the document's detail view at /app/[id]. Full or partial refunds supported. The audit cert prints a "REFUNDED on {date}" stamp under the original PAYMENT CAPTURED block — the proof of payment + proof of refund live on the same PDF, so dispute trails stay clean.

Can I capture a partial charge or hold the funds?

Yes — toggle "Authorize only" on the field. Stripe holds the authorization for up to 7 days; you capture (or release) from the document detail view after the doc seals. Useful for damage deposits on equipment rentals where the final amount depends on return condition.

What are the Stripe fees?

2.9% + $0.30 CAD per successful card charge on standard Canadian cards (Stripe's posted rate). ACSS Debit is 1% capped at $8 CAD per charge. Ink. takes nothing extra — the price you pay Stripe is the same price you'd pay them direct. Your Ink. subscription covers the integration.

How is sales tax (GST/HST/QST) handled?

Tax is the sender's responsibility — Ink. does not collect or remit tax. We recommend bundling tax into the field amount (e.g. $2,500 + $325 HST = $2,825) and noting the breakdown in the document text. Stripe Tax integration is on the Firm roadmap; not shipped yet.

What if the signer's card is declined?

Three paths surfaced inline: (1) Retry with the same card, (2) Switch to a different payment method (Apple Pay, Google Pay, ACSS, alternate card), or (3) Contact the sender — which fires a notification to the sender's email and pauses the envelope so they can extend a payment-link fallback. No silent failure, no abandoned envelope.
